On-trend feature wall ideas for your home

Spring always feels like a time of new beginnings, and for many of us it triggers the desire to start making some changes to our homes. This doesn’t necessarily have to mean huge expensive projects such as a new kitchen or bathroom. Even simpler adjustments such as a change of decor can make a big difference.

If you are planning to redecorate a main area of living space such as a living room, dining room or open plan kitchen/living area, one aspect to consider introducing is a feature wall. This can really transform the look and feel of a room and, by focusing just on one wall, it’s a very manageable change to make.

Traditionally, creating a feature wall has usually involved either painting one wall a different colour from the rest, or wallpapering it with a pattern or large mural. And, whilst these options are still popular and may work in your home, there are a few other ways to create a feature wall that are not only on-trend but you may find to be a more flexible option.

In this article we look at three other on-trend feature wall ideas that you may want to consider for your home.

Wall art

Wall art can be used very effectively to create a gallery wall – also known as a salon wall – in your living space. The concept of a salon wall is not new. In fact it dates back to the 17th century, where Royal Academy salon exhibitions in Paris would display walls densely packed from floor to ceiling with works of art. But it has once again become very on-trend.

One of the advantages of using wall art to build your feature wall is that you can change elements of it whenever you like. This is a refreshing difference from a feature wall with paint or wallpaper, which you are pretty much stuck with until you decide to change the whole look again.

Creating a gallery wall is fun and very personalised, because you can choose exactly which wall art to display. You can also decide whether to have items on your wall all the same size in a grid pattern, or to have a completely eclectic mixture of different sizes and frames. And you may want to have a rainbow of colours in your wall art, or to create a tableau of black and white wall art for a more uniform look.

And to add the perfect finishing touch to your feature wall, and for additional impact, you could also install some picture lights or spotlights to highlight some of your favourite items on your feature wall.

Texture

Another exciting idea for an on-trend feature wall is to consider introducing a different texture to the wall. Using a different texture on one wall can really add depth and interest to the room.

Some examples of different textures that you could use on a wall are:

  • Stone tiling;
  • Brickwork;
  • Wood panelling;
  • Metallic objects;
  • Fabric.

Any of these elements can transform a wall and make it into a feature wall in every sense of the word.

But if the idea of making such a dramatic change to a wall is a little daunting, a good compromise could be to go back to the wall art theme we looked at earlier, but also combine this with the use of a different element to add texture. For example, if you created a feature wall using a symmetrical grid of wall art using the medium of metal, this would add both texture and visual impact to your room.

Print Your Memory can help here. We can create wall art of your choice in premium aluminium. Not only does this enhance the colour and vibrancy of your finished prints, adding a dramatic textured effect to your feature wall, it is also extremely resilient and long-lasting so will look good for years to come.

Shelving

Another clever and practical way to create a feature wall is to install floor-to-ceiling shelving on one wall. The shelving itself could either be symmetrical lines, small grid shelving or a complete assortment of shapes and sizes. Your shelving could also be created from any material you choose, which means that you could build on the concept of texture that we have just been looking at. For example, you may want to incorporate bricks, wood or metal into your shelving, or any combination of those.

But the other key aspect of shelving is the way that you then curate the finished shelves. If your shelves are just gradually filled with clutter you will end up with an eyesore rather than a feature wall. But if they are used to showcase an eclectic collection of quirky and treasured objects – perhaps interspersed with either photos in frames or displayed as wall art – the shelved feature wall can become a glorious representation of the story of your life.

We hope that the above ideas have given you some inspiration on different ways of creating a feature wall in your home. And once you decide the option that is best for you, we hope you have fun creating your feature wall and enjoy looking at it every day.
